Information Services
I believe information services are at the core of librarianship. The ability to effectively use resources and technology to meet a user's information need is the mark of a professional.
Reference Work
As an MLIS student I served as an Internet Public Librarian as part of my Principles of Information Resources coursework which emphasized reference skills. The IPL utilized email reference to provide users with free, electronic resources while maintaining professional standards of library service. I look forward to developing reference skills in both digital and face-to-face scenarios that effectively utilize technology while providing excellent service. As a customer service representative for Convergys, I had to use communication skills to provide remote service over the telephone.
Reader's Advisory
In my Genres for Adult Readers course with Nancy Pearl we discussed fiction genres in terms of reader's advisory with book talks and annotations. I look forward to sharing a love of reading with library users and suggesting different reads to different patrons. As a bookseller at Barnes & Noble I frequently discussed books with customers and suggested other titles that they might enjoy.
Collection Development
In my Collection Development course, I was in a group that created a new collection development policy for the Rapid City Public Library in South Dakota. Our task was to create a readable, effective, and professional policy that provided selection and maintenance guidelines rooted in professional library policies. A professional policy catering to the library's users is essential in creating a useful collection and successful library. Through teamwork, we had a thoughtful discussion about what a CD policy should do and the values and components we wanted to include. I have learned the value of teamwork and how to effectively work within a group through many group projects at the iSchool. A collection development policy should be regularly reviewed, and I look forward to updating CD policies.
