Research and Reports
Through my time at the Information School, I have been presented with the opportunity to write lengthy reports for my courses. These not only display written communication skills, but also the ability to draft appropriate reports when necessary.
Briefing Report
In my Information Resources course, I was tasked with preparing a briefing report with a colleague about a local organization. We chose the iconic Seattle bookstore, Elliott Bay Book Company. This report concerned its long-term viability in the 21st century with competition from corporate and big box retailers, online competitors, and the rise of the electronic book. The report includes a background of the organization, environmental trends affecting it, and our recommendation for viability which was to find a new location.
Social Report
In my Information in Social Contexts course, I prepared a paper on professional librarian standards confronting the modern world. This paper was concerned with the tension privacy and surveillance in the post-9/11 world and how it affects libraries who are often caught in the middle. This report clued me in to the important ethical decisions that I will have to make as a librarian.
Case Study
In my Management of Information Organizations, I prepared a case study about the effects of business management. I was able to return to Elliott Bay Book Company. After the book store changed locations, I prepared a case study that looked at the rationale behind the decision--which I argued for in the briefing report--the management principles behind Elliott Bay, and how the business fared in light of these decisions.
